Member Benefits

Membership in Reno Gem and Mineral Society is open to individuals, families, and students who want to expand their knowledge and experience with rocks, minerals and other earth sciences. Benefits of becoming a RGMS member include communication and involvement with other rock-loving people through:
General Meetings: The Society has monthly meetings for all members and guests to attend. This is a wonderful time to hear the latest RGMS news, listen to guest speakers, become a member, and interact with other members in attendance. There is a fun raffle at the conclusion of the meeting which raffles off rocks, rock slabs, gems and handmade items donated by our RGMS members.
Monthly Newsletters: Our newsletter, the Conglomerate, is sent out via email at the
beginning of each month filled with all sorts of information pertaining to RGMS.
Field Trips: Field Trips are planned throughout the spring, summer, and fall months.
Organized by knowledgeable leaders, trips can be a single day to multiple day events.
Classes: Taught by our RGMS volunteer instructors, classes include rock and mineral
identification, lapidary, silver smithing, bead weaving, wire wrapping, cold connections, lost wax, faceting, slab saw training, among others. Class fees vary.
Open House: The rock shop has scheduled hours for use by members. Fee per hour is $7.50
Library: The RGMS library contains a comprehensive collection of books and maps to be checked out or viewed while at the rock shop
Educational Programs: Designed for our junior rockhounds, Youth Earth Science is a
monthly class or field trip to learn about geology and how minerals are used in our homes.
We typically meet on the second Saturday of the month at 3:00 to 4:30. The program is free for all students from about 5 to 13.  You do not have to be a member to attend, visitors are welcome. Kids can earn Earth Science Badges and start a rock collection.
RGMS also provides scholarships to the University of NV Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College, and a subsidized award to Camp Paradise.
Artisan Craft Fairs: RGMS organizes two craft fairs yearly. This is a fantastic opportunity for members to become vendors and show and sell their handcrafted items.
Social Events: Annual Christmas party, summer bar-b-que and potluck dinners.
Sales/Fundraisers: RGMS conducts an online auction (our 32 Auction) and other sales of rocks and equipment.
RGMS produces our Jackpot of Gems—a yearly gem and mineral show open to the public.
RGMS is a very active society. Check out the online calendar for when things are happening
